This Week in Grade 4 at Discovery

Hello everyone!  We hope you had a happy and restful long weekend.  Thanks to all the parents who joined us for our measurement lesson and pancake breakfast last friday.  It was a lot of fun!  Here are the pictures to prove it.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

DISCOVERY ZONE SUMMER CAMP: If you're looking for something fun to do this summer, Discovery School’s Summer Camp this year will run from June 9 to June 29.  Ask a teacher or at the office for more details.

FROM THE CAFETERIA – ELEMENTARY PARENT LUNCHEON - Take Your Parents to Lunch Day Friday May 11th. Our school cafeteria will be hosting the second student and parent luncheon soon. Flyers with menus will be going home with your children this week.  Come and enjoy lunch with your child next week for a fun afternoon.

THIS WEEK'S CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES:

Math:  We will be completing our mini-unit on adding/subtracting fractions and unit of measurement this week.  There will be a quiz to follow early next week.

Reading:  We will begin our final class novel of the year, 'Because of Winn-Dixie'.  We will be making a character sketch of our new protagonist, India Opal.  We will also be finding out the winners to our, 'Million Dollar Contest', and replicating the Million Dollar Shot from our previous story.

Writing:  We will be editing our collection of rhyming and free-verse poetry into a class poetry book this week.  We will also reflect on the introduction to our new class novel.

Social Studies:  We will be reading and discussing the story 'Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt'.  Our students will learn what it was like to be a child in the time of slavery in America, and how important it 'The Underground Railroad' was to people back then.  We will also be practicing our reader's theatre play.

Here's to a short but fun-filled week at Discovery!  Thanks for reading!
