Activities for the Week of Dec. 6th-10th

Greetings parents and students,

We are getting close to the end of another quarter and the start of our Christmas holidays.  I hope that our class is able to continue working hard right up to the end so that we can enjoy a well-deserved break.

Important Reminders:

December 16th is our Songfest night.  The elementary classes at Discovery will be showing off their dance moves for all to see.  We look forward to a fun night of song and dance.  See you there!!

THIS WEEKS CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES:

Math:

This week in Mathematics we will be completing chapter 6 in our math text and preparing for our test on Friday.  We will start the week by practicing our problem-solving skills and examining patterns.  We will then work on applying our problem-solving skills in challenging word problems, and even write our own word problems.  Thursday we will review all the multiplication skills we need for our chapter test, before writing our test on Friday.  As usual, a practice test will go home with each student Thursday night for review at home.  Good luck students!  Study hard!

Reading:

This week we will continue reading and thinking about our class novel, 'The Best Christmas Pageant Ever'.  We will be reading chapters 4 and 5 together in class and evaluating the way in which the plot of the novel builds and builds toward the climax.  We will be writing our weekly 'reading letter' describing this 'build-up', critiquing the author's use of humour in the story, and drawing connections between the story and our own lives.

Writing:

This week we will be completing our 'plot mountain' as a way of planning out our narrative before we begin to write.  The students will be asked to think about the key plot points in the story before they begin writing.  Once complete we will work on writing, sharing, and editing our very own stories.

Science:

We will continue with our science unit entitled, 'design and motion'.  The students will be building and testing their own vehicles and learning about the importance of design and concepts such as motion, force, and friction.

Spelling:

We will be focusing on how to properly spell pluralized words.  Our words are ferries, crutches, monkeys, leashes, blueberries, taxes, dollars, countries, inches, suitcases, brushes, eagles, umbrellas, sandwiches, bicycles.

Due to the time needed to practice our songfest routine we will not be having a grammar or character study lesson this week.

Have a great week everybody!!
